Persons born in 1966 or 1967 should apply for smart identity cards between 17 November 2003 and 10 January 2004

3 November 2003

Holders of existing identity (ID) cards who were born in 1966 or 1967 are required to apply for the new smart ID cards between 17 November 2003 and 10 January 2004 under the Hong Kong Smart ID Card Replacement Exercise.

The Immigration spokesman said, "Starting from November 3, 2003, eligible applicants can book an appointment by telephone at 1838 333, or via the ESDlife website: www.esd.gov.hk, or at any ESD kiosks."

Eligible applicants should submit their applications in person at a Smart ID Card Centre. If their ID cards bear the 'A' or '***' residential symbol, or their ID cards were issued on or after 1 January 1999 and bear the 'R' residential symbol, they only need to bring along their existing ID cards for the applications. Other than the aforesaid categories, eligible applicants should bring along their travel documents showing their current residential status in Hong Kong, in addition to their existing ID cards.

The spokesman reminded, "Holders of existing ID cards who were born in 1968 or 1969 are required to apply for the new smart ID cards on or before 15 November 2003. Statistics shows that about 190,000 applications were received as at 30 October 2003. Those who have not made their applications should apply as early as possible in order to avoid the last minute rush. Applicants are advised to book an appointment in advance."

The Smart ID Card Centres are open from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 9:15 pm and close on Sunday and public holidays.
