People born in 1968 or 1969 reminded to apply for smart ID cards by November 15

5 November 2003

A spokesman for the Immigration Department reminded today (November 5) that holders of the existing identity (ID) cards who were born in 1968 or 1969 should apply for the new smart ID cards on or before November 15, 2003.

"To avoid the last minute rush, persons of the above age groups who have not yet applied for the new smart ID cards should submit their applications in person to any one of the Smart Identity Card Centres as early as possible," the spokesman said.

The spokesman advised eligible applicants to make use of the appointment booking services by telephone at 1838 333, via the ESDlife website: www.esd.gov.hk, or at any ESD kiosks.

"The ID card replacement exercise covers all residents in Hong Kong, no matter whether they are permanent residents or temporary residents taking up employment (including foreign domestic helpers), investment, study, residence, etc. in Hong Kong," the spokesman added.

Eligible applicants whose ID cards bear the 'A' or '***' residential symbol; or were issued on or after January 1, 1999 and bear the 'R' residential symbol, only need to bring along their existing ID cards for the applications. Other than the aforesaid categories, eligible applicants should bring along their travel documents showing their current residential status in Hong Kong, in addition to their existing ID cards.

The spokesman also pointed out that failure to apply for a new ID card within the specified period would constitute an offence. Defaulters may be prosecuted and liable to a fine of $5,000. However, if applicants are absent from Hong Kong within the specified period, they can apply for new ID cards within 30 days of their return to Hong Kong.

For further information about the replacement exercise, please visit www.smartid.gov.hk or telephone the Immigration Department hotline at 2824 6111.
