Details of third cycle of ID card replacement exercise released

An Order announcing details of the third cycle of the Hong Kong Smart Identity (ID) Card Replacement Exercise has been issued by the Secretary for Security.

The Immigration Department said today (May 12) that subject to normal negative vetting procedure of the Legislative Council, the arrangement will be as follows:

Persons eligible to apply

Application Period
Holders of existing ID cards
born in 1956 or 1957

September 27 to
November 27, 2004
Holders of existing ID cards
born in 1954 or 1955

November 29, 2004 to
January 22, 2005
Holders of existing ID cards
born in 1952 or 1953

January 24 to
March 12, 2005

The Order also provides certain cross-boundary drivers with an option, as from September 27, 2004, onwards, to apply for new ID cards before the periods specified for their age groups or within the periods specified for their age groups. The arrangement will enable cross-boundary drivers to enjoy the convenience of the Automated Vehicle (Driver) Clearance System to be implemented at the vehicular control points in phases by end of 2004. Details of the application procedures will be announced in July, 2004.
