DOs and DON'Ts

 

A ) Notice of Intended Marriage

 

DOs

  1. Do make sure the marital condition given on the notice of intended marriage is correct.
  2. Do remind the marrying party to declare his/her marital status on the marital condition column.
  3. Do remind the marrying party to sign on the marital condition column when he/she gives the notice of intended marriage.
  4. Do submit the translation document when the divorce certificate is not in English or Chinese.
  5. Do make sure the supporting documents for application requiring parent's consent are in order.


DON'Ts

  1. Don't miss the signature of the Civil Celebrant of Marriages and the date of making the affidavit.
  2. Don't miss the signature of the marrying party who gives the notice of intended marriage.
  3. Don't miss the date of intended marriage.
  4. Don't use any notice of intended marriage that is not allotted to the Civil Celebrant of Marriages taking such notice.
  5. Don't miss any English version of the residential address and parents names.

 

B ) Marriage Certificate and Marriage Certificate Duplicate

     

    DOs

    1. Do make sure the registration number is correctly printed on the Marriage Certificate and Marriage Certificate Duplicate (A unique registration number, allotted to each application by the Registrar, is shown on the Certificate of Registrar of Marriages).
    2. Do make sure marital conditions of the marrying parties are correctly input on the Marriage Certificate and Marriage Certificate Duplicate.
    3. Do confirm the accuracy on the names of the marrying parties, parents of the marrying parties and the Civil Celebrant of Marriages.
    4. Do prepare and sign the Marriage Certificate and Marriage Certificate Duplicate one after the other.

     

    DON'Ts

    1. Don't miss the official seal/stamp of the Civil Celebrant of Marriages.
    2. Don't place a carbon paper between the Marriage Certificate and the Marriage Certificate Duplicate when preparing or signing them.
    3. Don't use the Marriage Certificate and Marriage Certificate Duplicate that is not allotted to the Civil Celebrant of Marriages celebrating the marriage.

     

    C ) Declaration (MR 65) and supporting documents

       

      DOs

      1. Do make sure that the supporting documents have been properly certified by the Civil Celebrant of Marriages.
      2. Do remember to return the MR 65 and the supporting documents together with the Marriage Certificate Duplicate after marriage celebration.

       

      DON'Ts

      1. Don't miss the signature of the Civil Celebrant of Marriages or the marrying party on the MR 65.
      2. Don't miss the acknowledgement part by the marrying party on the MR65.

       

      D ) Other points to note

       

      DOs

      1. Do ensure the Marriage Certificate Duplicate together with the MR65 and the supporting documents are returned to the Marriage Registration & Records Office within 7 days after the marriage according to section 21(7)(a)(iii) of the Marriage Ordinance, Cap 181. [Under section 31(2)(b) of the Marriage Ordinance, a Civil Celebrant of Marriages who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence.]
      2. Do confirm in writing (together with a copy of the Certificate of Registrar of Marriages) if a proposed marriage is not celebrated within 3 months.
      3. Do ensure the venues for celebrating the marriages commensurate with the solemnity of the marriage ceremony. In case of doubt, Civil Celebrants of Marriages are advised to visit the venue or be well-briefed of the programme prior to celebrating the marriage.

       

      DON'T

        Don't celebrate a marriage before the 'Certificate of Registrar of Marriages' is received.
