Collection of Identity Card
The processing time for an identity card application is usually 7 working days (excluding Saturdays and general holidays). The applicant's parent or legal guardian can collect the identity card in person or authorise a representative to collect it on his/her behalf within the period specified on the acknowledgement of application for an identity card.
Holders of an acknowledgement of application for an identity card who intend to travel are required under the law to produce a valid travel document, such as passport or Hong Kong Re-entry Permit, at Hong Kong immigration control points.
In Person
The parent or legal guardian who has applied on the applicant's behalf is expected to collect the new identity card in person on production of the acknowledgement of application for an identity card. If the applicant also attends in person, he/she will be asked to place his/her left and right thumbs on a scanner to confirm that the chip of the new card functions properly and the personal data stored therein are correct.
By Authorised Representative
If the parent or legal guardian wants to authorise another person to collect the applicant's identity card, he/she should notify the registration officer at the time of application and complete an authorisation form (ID678), or give his/her authorisation in writing. The authorised representative must have attained age 18 and should produce the following documents upon collection:
- His/Her valid proof of identity (e.g. Hong Kong identity card, passport or Hong Kong Re-entry Permit).
- The acknowledgement of application for an identity card.
- The parent or legal guardian’s authorisation form (ID 678) or written authorisation and proof of his or her signature.

Confirmation process on immigration self-service kiosk
If the applicant does not collect his/her identity card in person, he/she should, after obtaining the card from his/her parent, legal guardian or authorised representative, check the personal data stored in its ‘chip’ using a smart identity card reader installed at an immigration self-service kiosk. The applicant must complete the confirmation process himself/herself following the on-screen instructions.
Locations of immigration self-service kiosks are available through the following links.
