After registration of their child's birth, if parents wish to alter or add to the name of the child, they may apply at any of the Births Registries. However, no addition/alteration to the name of a child shall be made in the birth entries after the child has reached the age of 11.
For addition/alteration of the name of a child, the presence of the child is not required. If parents want to obtain a certified copy of a birth entry with addition/alteration of the child’s name, a prescribed fee will be charged.
In applying for addition / alteration to the name of a child, the parent must attend in person to make a declaration and produce the child’s birth certificate.
It takes 25 minutes to process an application for addition/alteration of child’s name.
No fee is payable if the addition / alteration to the child's name is made within the period of 42 days from the birth. After 42 days, a fee of HK$425 will be charged. If a certified copy of a birth entry with addition / alteration of the child's name is required, HK$140 will be charged for each copy.
A certified copy of a birth entry with the addition / alteration to the child’s name can be issued in nine working days (working days denote Monday to Friday excluding General Holidays) at a prescribed fee.
